A Tragic Reminder: Why Learning to Use an AED Can Save Lives

Updated: Apr 30

SCA is a leading cause of death worldwide. Every year, thousands of lives are lost because immediate help wasn't available. However, timely intervention with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can save lives. Learning how to use an AED is one of the most effective ways to respond to SCA and increase survival rates.

A recent tragedy has reminded us all of the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. China's "millennium baby"—a young woman who was born at the turn of the century—passed away suddenly at just 25 years old after suffering from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

She was born on the stroke of midnight at the turn of the new millenium, Jan. 1, 2000.

Why Knowing How to Use an AED is Critical:

  • Immediate action can save a life. When a person suffers from sudden cardiac arrest, their heart stops beating. An AED can deliver a shock to restore the heartbeat, but it must be used quickly—within minutes.

  • AEDs are easy to use. ZOLL AEDs are designed for simplicity. With clear voice prompts and step-by-step guidance, anyone can operate them in an emergency, even without medical training.

  • The survival rate increases with early defibrillation. Using an AED within the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest can increase the chance of survival by up to 70%.
